Furniture Styles: American Empire

Born between 1800 and 1840 and inspired by the French Empire design in a neoclassical interpretation of American furniture, American Empire is a classic style, both graceful and elegant, but retaining moderate proportions.

The skinny on American Empire style

This style stems from cabinets made in New York and other east-coast cities.  It is typified by:

  • brass or glass fixtures
  • dovetail joints
  • dark wood
  • often with carvings of pineapples, stars, or cornucopias
  • rich, luxurious fabrics (especially in chair backing)
  • arms and legs of chairs, tables or cabinets often curved and shaped into animal claws or scrolls at the ends
